Vegetable Garden Planting

This short list should help your

vegetable garden planting.

Plan your site:

You will need a sunny spot. Usually this means Southern exposure. It should be slightly sloped or flat. Slightly sloped will help with drainage while flat with rock content will also do nicely.  You can terrace but this is a much larger project.
The beginning gardener may want to put their garden close to the house where it can be seen. This helps them check on their garden.  They will want to keep it watered and relatively weed free.  They will definitely want to harvest their crops when ready.

What To Plant:

What do you and your family like to eat! That's the most important thing.

Next is climate, soil, and what will grow well in your area. You probably already know this from watching your neighbors. Don't be afraid to ask them what to start with.  If none of your neighbors garden, visit the neighborhood garden center.  They can help.

Where To Plant What:

Try to group plants by their harvesting period. Try to plant everything that will be harvested early in the same area.  This way the area can be cleared and replanted. Put Perennials such as asparagus and fruits  in a place they won't be damaged while you are digging up your annuals.

Do not crowd your plants. Read the instructions on the seeds or ask the gardener you by your transplants from.

Plants need air to circulate. It helps protect them from disease and poor growth..

Some plants make good companions. They benefit by being planted next to each other. Cucumbers, corn and beans are a good combination.
