Hydroponics Nutrients

Many of the rules that apply to soil fertilizers also apply to hydroponic fertilizers, or nutrient solutions. Hydroponic nutrients contain all the "food"  a plant normally would get from the ground.

Although you can make your own hydroponics nutrients, we recommend commercial types simply because these have been proven to be effective through years of research and development.

These nutrients can be purchased at a hydroponic supply store. They come in liquids and powders and are highly concentrated. The powdered forms are usually less expensive, but they are harder to use.  The liquid forms are a little more expensive and are easier to use.  Liquids usually have a PH additive to make it easier to maintain optimal PH levels.
Like soil, hydroponic systems can be fertilized with organic or chemical nutrients.  The beginner should start with chemical nutrients as these are much easier to maintain.

PH
Most plants can grow hydroponically within a pH range of 5.8 to 6.8, 6.3 is considered optimal. . Testing pH is easy and essential in hydroponics. If the pH is too high or too low the plant will not be able to absorb some nutrients a will show signs of deficiencies. PH should be checked once a week.  There are a number of ways to test PH.  Everything from kits to meters.  They range in price from about $4.00 to over $100.00.

Don't want to test.  If the plants look distressed.  Dump the water.  Add new water and correct amount of liquid concentrate. (Remember: Liquid concentrate usually has PH buffer.)

Some Basics:

Water
No water means your plants die.

75 degrees.  This is a good temperature to keep your water at.  Don't boil or freeze your plants.

Additional: If you are going to be gone for awhile talk to your neighbor about checking your plants.  If you plants are producing fruit or vegetables pay them in produce. Your neighbor is unlikely to know about testing the water.  Premix a gallon or two of nutrients and have them just pour it in until it is filled to a certain level.  (Whatever you decide, keep it simple.)

Light Supply
If you use artificial lighting get a timer.  It will save you time and money.  Plants like about 10 hours a day or more.

Oxygen Supply
If you are growing indoors make certain your plants are getting enough oxygen by bubbling water through them.  Most people will need to buy this system.
